Known variously as wetj, wedji, kulya, kaya and yallibiri by Aboriginal people in Western Australia's south-west, the emu (Dromaius novaehollandiae) is Australia's largest native bird and the second largest flightless bird in the world. Emus are commonly found throughout the Australian mainland, including Nambung National Park, but are now mostly absent from built-up areas such as the suburbs of Perth.
They live in a range of habitats including deserts, dense coastal shrublands, eucalypt woodlands and forests. Male emus do all the parenting, brooding five to 11 dark green eggs at a time in sparse nests of grass, bark and sticks built on the ground.
