Painted finches (Emblema pictum) are also known as emblas, painteds and mountain finches. They inhabit an area from the Pilbara coast through and inland areas. Western Australian coast, through to northern South Australia, Central Australia and western Queensland. The painted finch is a small passerine that is 10–12 centimetres in length and weighs around 11.5 grams. Painted finches usually occur in pairs or small flocks and congregate around water sources in habitats that consist of rocky areas and spinifex grass. The painted finch feeds on grass seeds mostly from spinifex species and sometimes may consume fruit and blades of grass.
