The red-tailed black cockatoo is a noisy, active species that spends much of its day feeding in large trees around most of mainland Australia. These iconic birds use their incredibly strong bills to extract seeds by tearing open seed pods of eucalypts, casuarinas and banksias. The cockatoo has largely black plumage and scarlet panels in the tail. Females have yellow spots on the head, neck and wings, and orange-yellow barring on the breast and undertail. Flocks of red-tailed black cockatoos are often seen flying and screeching loudly at sunset back to their roost in large trees, often on the banks of rivers or streams.
